Two Words: Buy AppleCare

650959231.jpeg

About six years ago, before there was such a thing as a “Geek Squad”, I had an extended warranty on an HP computer I bought at a big box retailer. The sound card started failing so I turned it in. It took me three months and the exhaustion of my entire collection of colorful epitaphs to get it back and and it was still broken. I finally fixed it myself and swore never to buy another extended warranty in my lifetime.

Well times change and if you have a lick of common sense, you eventually find yourself replacing your PC with a new Mac and (if you are like me) you probably get intoxicated by all the Apple Store karma and go ahead and purchase AppleCare despite the fact a not so small part of you is screaming “No, No, No … for the love of Pete No!”

Well fast forward to the last few months and Apple was finally presented with an opportunity to prove the value of AppleCare or validate my more cynical side. I’ve been dealing with a recurring problem with my USB port on my MacBook Pro. It just seems to have a mind of its own and with increasing frequency has been kicking off printers and USB drives. Most notably it garbles up recorded audio which can be extremely frustrating. As a result, it has been in and out of the Apple store several times.

During this period the Apple Genius gang has replaced the logic board (twice) the i/o board as well as a few other parts. I think they even put in fresh cheese for that little mouse on the wheel. To rule out software being the cause, I even did a complete rebuild of the hard drive.

Despite all these valiant efforts, the USB port still keeps on failing. This morning the Irvine Store Genius crew officially declared it a lost cause. For the first time in many years, I felt bad about the death of my computer. With my PCs it usually felt like a relief when the computer finally died. Almost like it had been put out of its misery and was now in a better place where there were no such things as autoexec.bat files and viruses. With my MacBook Pro, I felt like Elliott as they were wheeling in the crash cart on E.T. and declaring him dead. That MacBook Pro represented my return to the fold. It marked the end of my PC purgatory.

Of course, on the other hand this means AppleCare is springing to give me a new MacBook Pro. The new machine is faster than the old machine in just about every way. I went ahead and paid for an upgraded screen and processor, (the LED on the MacBook Air has spoiled me forever) so it will be a week until I have the new machine. It is a good thing I seem to have the setup process figured out.

Getting to the point of this post (there is a point) I must say that AppleCare is a “must buy.” The Apple folks really tried hard to fix my machine and you could tell how frustrated they were that their fixes were not sticking. You hear so many bad stories about computer tech guys. I found the complete opposite to be true at the Irvine Apple Store. Those guys were working hard on the problem and calling me regularly with status updates. They understood how much I rely on my computer and acted accordingly. You really couldn’t ask for better customer service.

I am considering purchasing AppleCare when my warranty runs out next month but as with all things, people in the UK get ripped off:

AppleCare on the Macbook Pro in the US: $349
AppleCare on the Macbook Pro in the UK: $553

It’s not like UK people don’t already pay a high price for a Mac in the first place.

@ Ian: Worth every penny though!

Congratulations on the new arrival David, didn’t you do well. Commiserations on your original MacBook Pro though. I wonder where the wonky Mac’s go?

Hear, hear! For those who (perhaps foolishly) ask my advice on tech matters, I always advise against buying extended warranties. Except, that is, for Apple. No, it is not because I am a stockholder (I am). Perhaps overstating the case a bit, I liken AppleCare to being a member of the Beautiful People’s Club if you remember that episode of Family Guy. But I have spent enough time in the Apple Store to have witnessed the disparate treatment of customers with and sans AppleCare. One customer with a 2 year old iPod and a display issue and NO AppleCare gets a faint apology and an polite invitation to shell out for a new device. The very next guy, with AppleCare, who tells of his tragic dunking of his iPod while surfing and then heroic but futile efforts to get the water out by running it over with his jeep gets real sympathy and a replacement unit. Well, I don’t have the best memory for precise details but I have noticed that AppleCare definitely seems to be worth it.

We have a few Macs in our household and they have Apple Care except for the Mac Pro. My daughter’s Mini was getting sluggish and when I ran Onyx it was reporting disk errors (the machine is two years old). Got the hard drive replaced with Apple Care so the Apple Care has paid for itself. Result: this machine will likely have a 4-5 year life. This is another advantage of Apple vs. PC – the machines last longer and having Apple Care around to fix major issues in the second or third year ensures that this longevity will be achieved.

Add me to those recommending AppleCare. I just consider it a safety net for my expensive and business critical machine. And if I need service NOW, I’ll upgrade to ProCare, but I digress.

When buying Applecare, shop around. The prices on AppleCare vary quite a bit. Check out Amazon and companies like LA Computer (where I bought my last two AppleCare warranties from). You can save quite a bit over what you would pay if you were buying from Apple.

As it happens, yesterday was the day the hard drive in my MacBook decided to crash mid-afternoon and mid-typing. Apple Care phone support confirmed the worst and made me an appointment at the Apple Store (fortunately only three blocks away). They swapped out the hard drive and installed a new one, and I was back at work within an hour. My wallet never left my pocket.

Don’t even consider not getting Apple Care. And have a solid backup system – mine isn’t perfect (I lost all the work I’d done yesterday) but avoided the worst.

    Question:

Do you need to buy AppleCare from a official source, or is Ebay sellers ok? ALSO, do you need to call or mail in a registration or do you register online with a code of some sort?

    Last,
Ive been doing research on AppleCare and it seems that about 75% of the comments Ive read say that Applecare is worth it. On the other hand, its a mixed bag on how the Applecare experience is. It seems 50/50 with people having a great experience, while others have terrible experiences. My 1 year warranty ends next month, so I need to make a decision soon. Im worried about my battery and since its covered under Applecare it would be peace of mind. On the other hand though, some the comments ive read about battery issues and getting Applecare to send a new battery is not very good. It seems your battery has to be pretty much dead before they will do anything. Anyone know if they send a replacement or do you need to send your battery in for testing? What if you just tell them your battery wont charge at all?

I dropped my brand new iPhone 3G the other day! Dumb dumb dumb!

Anyway…when I had an original iphone, if I dropped it, I’d just return it for another! No big deal! i had 3 before I realized how to hold on to it!!!

Well lo and behold… I dorpped my 3G the other day and scratched the silver bezel on my brand new White 3g iphone!

Looks gross to me but well it’s still beautiful!!!

Anyway my iphone had a couple of incidences of freezing/displayinf erratratic pixels on the screen!

    My first thought!!! Return it!

Get a fresh one due to (MAINLY) the scratched bezel!!!

So I made an appointment with the Genius Bar!

To make a long story short…the guy in front of me with a black (8 or 16gb model) got a fresh replacement!

I bought white because I wanted people to know what I had! Psycho I guess???

The next girl had a “scratched up ancient” OG iPhone and it had a dead home button!!!

    Replaced (with a fresh unit)!!!

    MY TURN!!!

    Zero sign of freezes…crashes…problems!!!

    A complete NO-GO on a fresh unit!!!

Mind you! It doesn’t look terrible! I did put it in a hard shell/screen cover since then!

But to me it isn’t a perfect iPhone…since I consider my self to be a perfect person!

    Bottom line…

I will be buying an iPhone AppleCare Extended Warranty on 7-11-09!

I actually bought it abour 2-3 days after Day !, it’s a good day to buy AppleCare…right?

Anyway, at the very least, I’ve got a well-protected slightly scratched cutey that will be protected until The Summer of NO LOVE 2010!

40 years after the Beatle(s) breakup!
