It was a busy week in the MacSparky Labs. Below you’ll find the week’s new videos and podcasts, a few of the conversations happening in the member community, and what’s coming next week. Most of those links lead straight into the Labs community on Circle, so they’ll only open if you’re a member. If you’re a Labs member who hasn’t set up your Circle access yet, send me a note and I’ll get you in. For members, this is your week at a glance. If you’re not one yet, it’s a peek at what you’re missing.

A Small Reset for the First Week of Q4

I shared a twenty-minute reset for the work we carried into the fourth quarter. The post walked through choosing one or two projects that deserved a turn and giving the rest an honest place, including the things we could choose to leave alone.

Using MacWhisper for Local Transcription
Video · October 6 · all tiers
I showed how I used MacWhisper to turn a recording into useful text on my Mac. Starting locally gave me a chance to decide what belonged in Obsidian and what, if anything, to share with an AI.

My Keyboard Shame
Post · October 7 · Pathfinder & Insider
I confessed to another round of keyboard indecision. My beautiful wooden Keychron tempted me away from Apple’s keyboard, but a dead battery or a need for Touch ID sent me right back. I asked whether anyone else had the same problem.

Airmarz AF01 Keyboard
Video · October 8 · Pathfinder & Insider
Several Labs members recommended this folding keyboard, so I tried it with an iPhone and an iPad. USB-C charging and separate Bluetooth channels were welcome changes, and I tested the pad that switched between numbers and trackpad duties.

In the Community
Email Application Discussion (Labs Discussion Board)
One member asked about mail apps that worked across Mac and iPhone without routing messages through another company’s servers. The replies separated the mail app from the hosting service and compared the tradeoffs around privacy and multiple domains. A useful conversation if you’re rethinking your email setup.
Expanding My Toolbox (Labs Discussion Board)
A member built a collection of web tools to solve problems at work and invited the community to try the preview. The project started with a concern about what happened to data pasted into unfamiliar online tools. The post linked to the toolbox and invited suggestions for improvements.
Border Router Needed for Aqara Smart Lock (Labs Discussion Board)
A smart-lock setup prompted a discussion about Thread border routers and the differences between Apple TV models. The replies weighed getting a HomePod mini right away against waiting for new hardware. Worth a look before you buy the missing piece for a smart-home project.
If you’re a Labs member and haven’t joined the Circle community yet, let me know and I’ll get you set up.

Links of Interest
- Michael Tremblay considered how righteous indignation could feed anger, and why noticing our own faults could change the way we responded.
- Jared Henderson read Neil Postman’s Technopoly and asked how technology changed what we counted as knowledge, along with who gained and who lost when a new tool took hold.
- Donald J. Robertson suggested weighing decisions against the person we wanted to become, starting with what a list of costs and benefits actually measured.
- Seth Godin asked when uniformity helped and when it got in the way. He contrasted machine parts that needed to meet a specification with art that left room for surprise.
