This week in the Labs, we worked on making our Macs more comfortable, our smart-home buttons easier to remember, and our important information easier for loved ones to find. We also revisited Meditations for Mortals, with a conversation about whether all these systems are helping us spend our time well.
Below you’ll find the week’s new videos and podcasts, a few conversations happening in the member community, and what’s coming next. Most links lead into the Labs community on Circle, so they’ll only open if you’re a member. For members, this is your week at a glance. If you’re not one yet, it’s a peek at what you’re missing.

What’s Your Button Recipe?
Written Post · November 4 · Pathfinder & Insider
Once smart-home buttons start appearing around the house, everyone needs to remember what a press, double press, or long hold does. I share my approach to giving those buttons a common language and ask how you’ve set yours up.

Book Club: Meditations for Mortals
Book Club Recording · November 5 · all tiers
Our discussion of Oliver Burkeman’s book kept returning to the gap between a full calendar and a life we’re happy to be living. We talked about accepting limits, putting down books that aren’t working, and finishing things before they’re perfect. I also worked through my own tension with the book’s approach to time management.

In the Community
DEVONthink AI-Assisted Naming and Filing · Labs Discussion Board
A member reported naming and filing roughly 800 documents for $2.45 after following the Labs walkthrough. The workflow reads the document for its date and meaning, then uses those details to name and file it consistently.
Local Models and Document Review · Labs Discussion Board
A member shared a detailed comparison of local models, Apple’s private cloud models, and Claude on document-review tasks. In these tests, finding relevant information wasn’t the biggest obstacle: confidently adding false claims was. A useful account of where their experiments succeeded and fell short.
Digital Recorder Recommendation · Labs Discussion Board
An interesting hardware puzzle: a recorder that can be operated in the dark, with its screens and lights covered. The discussion gets into why a physical switch and feedback you can feel matter when you can’t look at the device.
If you’re a Labs member and haven’t joined the Circle community yet, let me know and I’ll get you set up.
Coming Up
Our November meetup is this Saturday. We rotate a Saturday session into the calendar so people who can’t make the weekday gatherings have a chance to join.
